Tips to survive the college dorm/apartment move-in experience
- Get general information about your room (often given to you at orientation) or or a recommended list of items to bring.
- Room size
- What appliances will be supplied by the school
- Internet access for your computer
- Is cable provided
- Room phone number
- Find out what items are prohibited to bring in your dorm room.
For example, some dorms don't allow candles or halogen lights.
- Contact your future roommate. Make sure you don't double up on items when you only need one-a TV or refrigerator, for example. Get opinions about the style of room you want.
- Don't over-pack. Be realistic about the amount of space in your room.
- Bring certain items from home (pictures, etc.) that would make your dorm/apartment atmosphere feel more like "home".
- If you forget a necessity at home, don't worry! You can always shop in your new location, or have your parents mail it to you.
- Get your School address and your mailbox number.
- Choose your clothes wisely. You won't need clothes for the entire year (you can always exchange clothes during seasonal school breaks). Bring clothes for the season and special occasions.
