My Kid is Going to College

"My kid is going to college!!!"

After the long, stressful, college-planning process, it is time to prepare your student to attend college. Here are some helpful tips:

  • Speak to a financial advisor at your student's college; figure out a plan for that year
  • Apply to FAFSA* before March 1
  • Research on different scholarships that your student maybe qualified for.
  • Obtain the Dorm Essential List on www.insightforyouth.com
  • Check with the school for your student's dorm room measurements ( you don't want them to bring too many items)
  • Start shopping for items your student may need to bring to college
    • Check with the school what is restricted to bring to the dorm
While your student is attending college, keep in touch with them. They may not have the guts to say they miss you, but they really do. Attending college for the first time can be a very stressful time for them; giving them a phone call once in a while may comfort them.

* FAFSA stands for "Free Application Federal Student Aid". The government offers free money and loans to college-bound students. The amount is based on your child's income, your spouse's income and your own individual income.
