Make yourself attractive to future employers
The way you initially present yourself to an employer is crucial in getting the job you want. You can do this by developing a strong resume. You should take advantage of your school's career service resources. There maybe workshops that can help develop a strong resume. When workshops are not available, there is always someone in the career service to help you develop a resume. Here are some tips that can help you develop your resume.
- List what your objective for developing a resume.
- For example: "To apply an internship while earning a degree in finance."
- Make a list of previous jobs, organizations and volunteer work.
- It speaks a lot when you've taken leadership because it shows that you've taken greater responsibility.
- Don't worry if you don't have previous employment experience; inform of other activities that you were a part of. It shows dedication and other qualities that will make you stand out apart from other applicants.
- Gather contact information from references and previous employers/ head of organization
- Make a list of responsibilities from each job and volunteer work.
- Make your responsibilities presentable and professional.
- What not to do:"I stuffed envelopes for bills being sent out to customers."
- The more presentable way: "I was in charge of delivery of accounts receivables to customers."
- List of awards and special recognition. Also list why and what you did to receive them.
- List special skills and/or certification that you may have obtained and learned.
- For example: "I am bilingual in English and Spanish."
- Your resume does not have to be very extensive. One page is fine. Future employers do not want to spend a lot of time reading your resume.
- List the education you have completed thus far. Also list the type of courses you are currently learning.
- List your other activities/hobbies apart from volunteer work. This may show other qualities that maybe appealing to your future employers.
- For example: "Collect stamps" This may show that you are organized.
- Another example: "Dance in a hip-hop group" This may show dedication, hard work, and your creative side.
